The health benefits of lemon are due to its many nourishing elements [1] like vitamin B6, vitamin A, vitamin E, folate, niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, copper, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, phosphorus, and protein.

Lemons are known to be one of the most versatile fruits around, and contain a high level of Vitamin C. Lemons also contain protective antioxidants called flavanoids. They are low in calories but high in flavour.

Headlines have linked drinking lemon water to many other health claims, including weight loss, improved digestion, ‘alkalising’ effects on the body, improved skin and detoxification.

How to choose

Look for unblemished, firm lemons that feel heavy for their size and have no tinges of green (which indicates that they're underripe). Avoid very pale lemons, as they are older, and will contain less juice.
